ARTISTIC STATEMENT
My name is Michael Burns, a 21-year-old filmmaker going into my last semester at The Sidney Poitier New American Film School. I’ve been creating all of my life; From drawing to writing, my love for expressing myself through art blossomed into a career in filmmaking. Whenever I’m asked what makes me unique as an artist, the first thing I say is…

I’m not interested in being quiet.

As a filmmaker, my work extends far beyond the director’s chair. I specialize in telling bold, emotionally resonant stories through every single stage of production. Whether I’m building a narrative from scratch or working with a client to bring their vision to life, my goal is always the same: to create work that grabs people’s attention, challenges their expectations, and stays with them long after it ends.

Over the years, I’ve written, directed, and produced 13 original short films - most of which are rooted in the horror and thriller genres. Each project has pushed me to grow, not only as a storyteller but as a leader, problem solver, and collaborator. What started as small, self-driven productions have evolved into increasingly ambitious films with larger crews and more complex shoots. Through trial, error, and relentless dedication, I’ve become confident managing all aspects of a production - I’ve learned to move fast, think strategically, and most importantly, deliver under pressure.

But filmmaking, for me, has never just been about technical proficiency or artistic control. It’s about crafting meaningful experiences - moments that provoke questions, stir emotions, and leave an imprint. I aim to spark conversations with viewers who aren’t afraid of ambiguity, who crave stories that ask them to confront something deeper in themselves. I believe in the transformative power of cinema - its ability to inspire, to disturb, and to wake people up. That’s why I make films. That’s why I care so deeply about this craft.
As a freelance filmmaker and editor, I bring that same intensity and care to every project I touch - whether I’m cutting a fast-paced promo, shooting branded content, designing story-driven visuals, or collaborating with clients to help shape their message. I’ve worked across a variety of formats and styles, and I pride myself on being flexible. No matter the size or scope of the project, I treat every job like a story worth telling.

Looking ahead, my vision is clear: I want to contribute to the larger culture of film and media, not just as an artist, but as a professional collaborator. I’m not interested in subtle work that fades into the background - I want to create work that demands attention, that moves people, that matters. Whether I’m working on an independent film or a commercial assignment, I bring the same commitment and urgency.
I believe in the power of what we’re making.
